The College of Massage Therapists of BC (CMTC) is the regulatory body for the profession of massage therapy in BC.

All members of the CMTC must be insured to practise in BC. As a member of the CMTC, you are required to post your certificate of insurance in a conspicuous place in your massage therapy business.

The College of Massage Therapists of BC is currently working on a new CMT regulation that will be effective in early 2013. The new regulation will include an examination component as well as a component that requires CMTs to have a certain number of hours of professional practice.

There will be a transition period for current CMTs to meet the new requirements. For example, the new requirement will be that CMTs need to have a minimum of 500 hours of professional practice in the last three years.

The new regulation will also include an additional designation for Registered Massage Therapists:

Acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, naturopathic doctors and physical therapists will be able to refer to themselves as RMTs with a speciality designation.

The College of Massage Therapists of BC is looking for feedback from the public, so go to the College of Massage Therapists of BC website and click on the "Current Consultation" page.

The College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTC) was established in 1997 and the profession of massage therapy was regulated by the CMTC in August 1998. The CMTC is a voluntary regulatory body established under the Health Professions Act.

The College of Massage Therapists of BC is responsible for ensuring that the public is served by massage therapists who are qualified to practise safely and competently, who meet the standards of practice and the requirements of the Act, and who are accountable for their conduct.

The CMTC registers members to practise as massage therapists and massage therapists in a limited scope of practice, investigates and resolves complaints against members, and takes disciplinary action against members in appropriate circumstances. The College develops and enforces standards of practice for members and provides public education and outreach.

While it is the responsibility of the Government of BC to ensure that health practitioners are trained and qualified, it is not the role of the Government of BC to regulate the profession of massage therapy.

The CMTC is self-funded and is not funded by the Government of BC. The CMTC is funded by the fees it collects from registrants and by the revenue it receives from its practice review program. The CMTC does not receive any funding from the Government of BC.
